The City of Niš and the Organisations for the Protection of Animals will work together on solving the problem of stray dogs and abandoned dogs through mutual partnership and mutual trust, as it was concluded at the meeting between Niš City Mayor Dragana Sotirovski, her associates and representatives of animal lovers’ associations. The common solutions are our joint responsibility, the responsibility of the City of Niš and of the organisations for the protection of animals. The meeting was held on the occasion of International Animal Protection Day.

An agreement was reached on the formation of a joint working group consisting of the representatives of public companies, the City of Niš and the competent republic institutions. The working group would analyze the situation in the field and establish the facts. It is necessary to create a database of microchipped animals on the streets, as well as the database of the dog owners. Veterinarians should inform dog owners about the obligatory sterilization and microchipping of pets, and PUC Mediana will continue to provide services in the shelter. Animal protection organisations took care of 192 living in on the streets in 2020, and 151this out of which more than 70% have been dogs abandoned by the owners.
