Circular Economy – Use Everything Again

Niš City Mayor Dragana Sotirovski met with the ambassadors and representatives of the embassies of the Nordic countries in Niš City Hall on the occasion of the Conference Boosting Circular Economy in Serbia – Nordic Experiences held at Niš Science Technology Park. The Mayor and the ambassadors talked about the importance of the circular economy and the determination of Niš to base its development on sustainable development, knowledge, innovative and high technologies. The guests of the Mayor of Nis were the Ambassador of Norway Jorn Gjelstad, Ambassador of Finland Kimmo Lahdevirta, Ambassador of Denmark Susanne Shine and the Director of Development Cooperation at the Swedish Embassy in Serbia Karin MacDonald. The conversation about the circular economy continued in the Science and Technology Park at a conference dedicated to that topic.

Thanking everyone at the conference that supported the project Mayor Sotirovski spoke about realized or started projects aimed at sustainable development and environmental protection in Niš. According to her the circular economy saves resources, reduces pollution, promotes innovation, reduces the cost of production and creates new jobs. At the same time, it is the fight against climate change. She pointed out that Niš has environmental topics on its agenda every day, and that it set as its priority to leave the linear economy and to base its development on knowledge, on innovative and high technologies. Danish Ambassador Ms. Susanne Shine mentioned that we have lived in a linear economy so far and that this is not the way we should go on. She emphasized the importance of education on conserving resources and stated that the Danish experiences are such that children will first react if you put waste in the wrong bag. The director of development cooperation at the Swedish Embassy, Ms. Karin McDonald, ​​ said that the circular economy means that we use everything again. The results of the Finnish city of Lahti and how that city became the green capital of Europe were presented at the conference. Partners of the Nordic embassies for the project are the Ministry of Environment of Serbia, Serbian Chamber of Commerce (especially its Circular Economy Hub), National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED), Chamber of Commerce of Vojvodina, Nordic Business Alliance (NBA) and the cities of Niš, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Kraguejvac.
