The Exhibition of Arabic Calligraphy

The exhibition of Arabic calligraphy authored by Aleksandar Stanković from Niš, supported by the City of Niš and the Niš Cultural Center, was opened in the Officers’ Home in the presence of the Member of Niš City Council Adriana Anastasov, the Assistant Mayor Jovana Mitić and the ambassadors of Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. The exhibition is part of the international cooperation of the City of Niš, said Adriana Anastasov. We announced at the very beginning of our mandate that we will support freelance artists and all those who want to contribute to the cultural life of Niš, she mentioned. Egyptian Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, the country that is the seat of the Arab League, assessed that the exhibition was impressive and that Arabic calligraphy is „double art“ – first visual, because we first notice the drawing, and then it is literature that contains selected wisdom. We want to promote Arab culture and language and friendship with Serbia in Serbia, said the Ambassador. The artist Aleksandar Stanković says that he has been practicing Cyrillic and Latin calligraphy for 10 years, and that he fell in love with the Arabic language as a child, 30 years ago, that he was self-taught, but also that there were no textbooks or the Internet at the time he started. He exhibited works of Arabic calligraphy created in the last two years, the content of which are actually quotations from the Bible and Arab folk wisdom. He is a member of the Club of Arabic Calligraphers.
