Child marriages are a serious violation of human rights, as it has been concluded at the meeting of the National Coalition for the Ending Child Marriages, which was attended by the Niš City Mayor Dragana Sotirovski, who is a member of the Coalition. The Coalition operates within the Coordination Body for Gender Equality, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr. Zorana Mihajlović, who also participated in the meeting. An initiative has been launched to change the provisions of the Family Law, the Criminal Law and the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence. The participants in the meeting agreed that the provision that marriage of a minor is possible with the consent of the competent court should be deleted from the Family Law. Under the motto “Childhood, Not Marriage”, a media campaign to prevent marriages of minors will follow. The action is being realized in partnership with UNICEF. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, UNICEF and experts in certain fields related to this topic.
