MLADGRAD AWARD
Niš City Office for European Affairs was nominated for 2011 Award MLADGRAD for its contribution as a local self-government to the improvement of the position of young people in the local community.
Тhe City of Niš decided to open European Corner - a spot in the very city center where Nis citizens could have the opportunity to get information about European culture, institutions, economy, laws and alike. The main objective and vision of this project is to motivate Niš citizens to become interested in the development of a modern society, to create active civil consciousness and thus enable better understanding of EU and integration processes. Raising public consciousness about the importance of the civil participation and about the need of the joint work and cooperation between citizens, NGOs, local self-government, media and political parties should lead to the necessary reforms in the Serbian society which is the main precondition for EU accession, integration into European value system and entering the family of modern European states. That is why the intention of Niš City is to try through European Corner to improve in a way the life quality for its citizens and, at the same time, to motivate them to do their own research and to advance their knowledge. European Corner should be a place for bringing closer Niš citizens to European Union and its member states.
On the occasion of the International Youth Day, Civic Initiatives traditionally organize the MLADGRAD Award for local self-governments that have contributed the most to young people in the local community. The MLADGRAD Award is organized with support of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Government and international partners. The MLADGRAD Award was introduced in 2010. The goal of this award is to show recognition to the overall contribution of local self-governments to young people in local communities and to make that contribution visible to the wider public.
