MAYORS FOR PEACE

City of Niš accessed the membership in “The Mayors for Peace” in August 2006. This organization is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the Program for promotion of Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons announced in 1982 by then Mayor of Hiroshima Takeshi Araki at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held in New York. The Mayors Conference officially became registered UN NGO in “Special Consultative Status”.

 

In 2009 the organization has 2.963 member cities in 134 countries and regions.

 

The Mayors for Peace strives to raise international public awareness regarding the need to abolish nuclear weapons and contributes to the realization of genuine and lasting world peace by working to eliminate starvation and poverty, assist refugees fleeing local conflict, support human rights, protect the environment, and solve the other problems that threaten peaceful coexistence within the human family.
