The University Library "Nikola Tesla" is a wide-ranging scientific library offering an extensive range of facilities and services tailored to fulfill a crucial role in supporting the learning, teaching and research activities of the University of Niš. Furthermore, over a period of forty years, it has grown into a modern, technically well-equipped center capable of providing comprehensive services adjusted to reflect the interests of the widest public.
The University Library "Nikola Tesla" is a wide-ranging scientific library offering an extensive range of facilities and services tailored to fulfill a crucial role in supporting the learning, teaching and research activities of the University of Niš. Furthermore, over a period of forty years, it has grown into a modern, technically well-equipped center capable of providing comprehensive services adjusted to reflect the interests of the widest public.
The Library, which is located in the south wing of the University building, has about 80,000 books and 1,160 periodicals in more than 60,000 volumes, a collection of doctoral dissertations and master's theses promoted at the University of Niš and other universities, as well as a rich collection of referral publications.
The Library is particularly proud of its extensive collections in social sciences, language and literature, philosophy, mathematics, topical technical literature, biomedicine, and capital art collections.
The holdings of the Library have been significantly enriched and expanded over the years. This delicate process has been carried out in accordance with a carefully devised general concept of development, taking into account potential long-term needs of the readers.
The Library supplements its stock mostly by purchase, but also by exchange and donations. A significant number of publications are received on exchange with other libraries throughout the world. The University journal Facta Universitatis plays a significant part in this exchange.
The Library stock also contains a number of valuable legacies of the distinguished scholars from this area. In an attempt to overcome a long-term vacuum which has occurred in foreign literature acquisition, the Library has managed to provide access to several foreign full-text data bases, available since 2002.
The entire collection of the Library is inventoried, comprehensively catalogued and classified according to the latest standards.
The Library has an optimal local network configuration providing opportunities for a wide range of computer-based information services and computer-assisted data processing. It operates several local databases, such as the catalogue of monographs and serial publications, a database on the University teaching staff and their works, etc. The Library also maintains a computerized circulation control system.
The central catalogue allows retrieval of the Library's catalogued holdings on the basis of 20 different elements based on information from bibliography or content itself.
The Library also provides access to a wide range of electronic sources of information through the Serbian Academic Network.
All this makes the Library of the University of Niš one of the best organized and equipped in Serbia.
The Library is trying to develop publishing activities.
Thematic exhibitions dedicated to significant dates, individuals or events, as well as presentations of newly acquired stock is regularly practiced in order to provide for a close contact with the readers.

The staff working in the Information and Lending Department are always ready to provide readers with any information they might need in order to make the best use of the available resources, including help concerning the inter-library loan service through which material may be borrowed from other libraries from the country and abroad.
The Library opening hours are 7:30 to 19:30, i. e. 7:30 to 14:30 in July and August.
LIBRARY COOPERATION
The University Library has developed good relations with all faculty libraries of the NiS University, and with other academic and public libraries in Serbia and abroad.
